Lazy Reno on a warm afternoon 110508

I have previously posted about Reno, one of the Living Desert Reserve's mountain lions. He died last year, but was the longest living mountain lion in captivity. He had a large enclosure and the company of another mountain lion, a female. While they didn't always get along, he did seem to be quite content in his surroundings, as you will see! "Sssshhhhhh! Don't wake the putty tat!"

Awwwww....YOU woke him up!

My World Tuesday November 4, 2008

We have lived in our home in the desert now for 33 years, going on 34. It was our first home together and we raised our grown children in it. We have many fond memories of this home and over the years we've planted many trees here. I always wanted a cottonwood tree and in 1979, my husband surprised me and brought a young tree home. He bought it at a nursery up in the high desert. Cottonwoods actually do grow well down in our lower desert, as long as they get water. There are many of them up in the mountains. We planted it away from the house, but where we can see it. We actually have 42 trees in our yard, which is about 1/3 acre! Many of them are acacias or palo verdes, both of which "naturalize". That means if the seeds fall on the ground and get enough water, they sprout and grow on their own! HA, HA! I don't have to buy any more of them! Over the years, this tree has been home to a family of orioles and various owls who come and sit in it at night and hoot and catch "critters" in our yard and neighboring ones. It is HUGE and our neighbors hate it because its leaves blow into their yard, but I love to sit and listen to the wind blow through its leaves. They actually offered to pay for half of its trimming a few years ago, so we took them up on the offer, and to my horror, the tree trimmers trimmed the branch with the oriole nest! I'm hoping that they will come back, but I didn't see them this spring in the tree, so maybe they've found and made a new nest? Anyway, I took this photo one morning early this week. This is "my world", at least....my backyard!

Saturday afternoon drive November 2, 2008

After hubby and I worked with the horses Saturday morning, we drove up the hill to a little town called Idyllwild, CA. Idyllwild sits on top on Mt. San Jacinto, which is 10,834 feet high and on the second highest mountain range in Southern California. It is a small town of about 3,500 people. The ISOMATA campus of USC is in Idyllwild and they have summer concerts outdoors there. We haven't been there for 5 years! WHERE does the time go? Anyway, hubby suggested that we drive up there for lunch. I know the town is always decorated for Halloween so I agreed. We have a favorite bakery/restaurant there which we love to stop and visit, but we weren't sure if it had survived the recent economic woes (it did!). Along the way, we took some pics of the pretty fall leaves. Here are some pics of our trip to the bakery/restaurant.

snow pics from March 2006 for November 1, 2008

I posted these pics on my desert horses blog, but thought I'd also post them here so you can see the contrasts available in our desert. From sun to snow!

These were actually taken in March 2006 after an Arctic storm dumped the snow on our local mountains. The Palm Springs tram has a yearly contest: If you send in a postcard and correctly guess the first recorded snowfall of the season, and your postcard is picked, you win a free dinner at the restaurant at the top of the tram! Guess I need to get busy and guess a date! Isn't the snow pretty?

Skywatch Friday October 31, 2008

When Sunni was the only horse I had, a couple of years ago, I used to board him out in Indio Hills. Indio Hills is right along the San Andreas fault near Indio, CA. There are 5 acre ranches in that area and a friend offered to board him for me as I was a newbie horse owner. I used to drive out through Thousand Palms Canyon on my way out to see him. This was taken on a crystal clear morning when I got up very early to do "poop patrol" at the ranch. Isn't the morning sunlight pretty?

Rain on the horizon 10/30/08

When we arrived at Canyon de Chelly this summer, it was monsoon season. You can just see the cliffs of the canyon, but look at the thunderstorm off in the distance! WOW! The storm hit Chinle, AZ that night and knocked out the power to the hotel! It was a terrific lightning show!

My World for 10/28/08 Palm Springs mountains

Since this is where hubby spends 5-6 days a week, I thought I'd post these pics for my "My World" Tuesday, October 28, 2008. He took these pics in 2006, after a late March snow storm. Aren't our mountains pretty? They are the mountains next to Palm Springs, CA and these pics were taken at the Desert Springs Marriott Resort in Rancho Mirage, CA.
