We left Farmington, NM and headed out to Monument Valley. There was a terrific thunderstorm Saturday night off in the distance toward MV. We have seen puddles and pools of water this entire trip and Sunday was no exception. Red clay was all over the road from the Navajos' trucks. Standing water could be seen everywhere. Even though the day was clear (so far...), we could still smell the rain.
The bottom pic shows Shiprock. We could see it in the distance as far away as Mesa Verde. It is a VERY prominent geological feature. I believe it is an ancient volcanic chimney. You can actually see the lava flow to the right of it. Very impressive!
