Last weekend I woke up early, got up, and drove from the desert to our local mountains. Since today is my first day of spring break, I slept in! (until 6:00 a.m.!!!) However, on this particular morning, the sky was clear, the air was cold, the wind was blowing, and I was alone in the forest. This little woodpecker and his buddies were my only companions. And, they were busy calling to each other, so it was quite a symphony! I got out my big Olympus camera, but this was the closest I could get before this little fellow moved on. Skywatch Friday for April 10, 2009.

It must have been a wonderful experience, an early morning walk in the forest with woodpeckers. Maybe someday I'll explore the pine forests in my local mountains. Nice post!
That is a beautiful picture-- i love the dark wood and woodpecker against the sky!
I love the sound of woodpeckers. Apparently in a retirement community near my home, there is a large band of them that is causing a lot of noise and damage to the houses there. It's sad that some people have resorted to shooting the birds to get them off their property...
Happy skywatching and enjoy your break...
like your shot...the spikey-ness of the pine and the wee little one in the tree :) Lovely.
This is a very charming photo. I love him, sitting there in that big, rough tree against the lovely sky.
I love to be alone in the woods, it is quiet of human noise and you can enjoy the sounds of nature. Once my husband and I were with a group on a raft in Alaska. We were all quiet, listening. Then one woman shouted "it's so quiet here". Well, it had been!
